Site Updates and Goals

2013 so far has been 1000x more hectic then I could have ever planned for. My day job is incredibly busy the first month of the year and I have been doing 60+hrs a week so finding time to work on Degrees and Debt has been a challenge.  Nonetheless, in the few minutes I do spare I have been launching and improving the current design/theme which is new for 2013.  It isnt complete yet and it wont be for a while as I am sure we will be making changes to perfect and tweak certain areas as readership grows.

Its no secret that one of the goals with DandD is for me to turn a profit on it and grow from there. This is intended to be an asset for me in more ways then one.  Not only do I hope to gain some income from this blog and future internet en-devours, but I would like to catalog my journey to being debt-free and the time thereafter investing and growing my personal finances.  As you can see there are a few ad’s on the site, but I hope to never incorporate more ad’s then would be visually appealing.  I have no intention on making this a website full of ad’s.

Some goals for the initial year at DandD include:

  • Establishing a footprint in the finance blog niche of the internet
  • Growing readership on a consistent basis
  • Gaining consistent and growing advertiser requests and income
  • Bringing on additional writers (hopefully some current students and recent grads, as well as established professionals) to document their journeys and stories

The first thing anyone can notice is that none of these goals above are SMART.  They are not measurable as this is going to be the first full year of DandD and will serve as a test period but also a bench marking period.  I hope to utilize the upcoming months to work out the kinks of the site, establish a schedule for posting and maintenance and most importantly set myself up for future success with Degrees and Debt.

I love comments, please let me know what you think of the site, any suggestions you may have or if you want to share your journey!

  1. Hi Edgar,

Good to see that you started posting again! I’m loving the theme, I think it is the same one I use.
I also love setting SMART goals and I actually did a fairly in depth post about it (http://www.monsterpiggybank.com/setting-smart-goals/)

Not that I am an expert blogger or anything, but I have learned a couple of things since I started that I will share with you.
    1) Comment on as many financial blogs as possible and try to leave thoughtful comments
    2) The CommentLuv plugin grew the comments on my blog by about 50% overnight.
    3) Get a regular posting schedule down pat and stick to it. I do Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s. That way your readers know when to visit your blog. Also be sure to let your readers know that is when you post plan on posting.
    4) Don’t go overboard with the advertiser requests. People visit your blog to listen to you, not some person selling their wares.
    5) Guest post as much as possible, but make sure you still continue your normally posting regime. There is nothing worse than doing great guest posts and having old content waiting for new readers on your blog.

Good luck to you. I feel like the longer I have been blogging the easier it has become so try not to get disheartened if it takes a while. To give you an idea of the time frame it can take to grow your blog, you should checkout my monthly update posts where you can see my growth each month.

    • @MonsterPiggyBank Thanks so much! I appreciate all the tips and hope to implement and perform them!
